In this post I will provide a review for independent travelers who intend to visit Egypt for the first time. It is well known that Egypt has always been one of the top destinations in any tourist Industry.
However, since 2011, tourism in Egypt decreased immensely, due to the political turbulence and change of power. But I think this was not justified. Egypt is quite safe. Seeing this great nation and beautiful country with its amiable people, is enough to give you the most pleasurable experience. However, when touring Egypt, especially for the first time, take into consideration that it is essential to book at least a ten-day-stay to ensure you get the real taste of this magnificent culture. It is essential however for first timers, in my opinion, to opt for a 5-star hotel. There is a great choice of hotels with reasonable prices; but it is better to choose one in the center of events. By that I mean hotels close to the area of “Tahrir Square” the main square in the heart of Cairo. Hotels such as Conrad, Ritz Carlton, Intercontinental Cairo Semiramis etc, would be a great choice.
It is a good starting point for touring the main attractions such as Khan el khalili bazaar, Cairo Citadel, El Azhar Mosque and main shopping streets such as Talaat Harb, Qasr El-Nil and Sherif Streets. Giza Pyramids are not far away as well. Also taking a two-hour trip on the Nile would be a great refreshing experience.
For transportation, Taxi is the preferable method for getting around in Cairo. The easiest method is to call for a taxi, and negotiate the price - having done homework about rates- beforehand. On the fifth day, you can arrange for a one-night stay in the second major city in Egypt, Alexandria, taking the morning speedy train from “Mahattat Misr”, Cairo’s main train terminal. I recommend Helnan Palestine or Sheraton for one night to visit Alexandria’s main attractions on the 5th & sixth day of your trip, before getting back to Cairo.
I deliberately did not mention the major attractions in south of Egypt Aswan and Luxor, not mention the eastern parts of Egypt such as Hurgada & Sharm El sheikh, and many other attractions, which would require another visit to be discussed in coming posts.
